We had our first game of the season tonight. I'm a little sick, so I was considering not going but felt guilty about the possibility of leaving the team w/ no subs (turns out we had 2). I also almost turned around because DC drivers can't drive worth shit and it was grid-lock the first 2 miles or so. But I made it, and our team blew out the other team (they were all new to the lab, had no subs, and didn't really know what league they should be in).
Halfway through the second half, a guy an adjacent court collapsed to the ground. He was lying face down and not moving. One of my teammates ran over and started asking him if he needed help. No response and no pulse or breathing. So he started doing chest compressions for a minute or so. Then some gym staff showed up with a defibrillator, they cut his shirt open and zapped him. No response. More compressions, another zap. No response. After a few more compressions he started breathing and his feet wiggled. Then he tried to get up and people held him down. He started yelling when they asked him his name, etc.
He was fully conscious when the paramedics arrived and wheeled him out. I didn't know the guy, but he looked to be about 45ish, maybe a little older. It scared the crap out of a lot of people, me included. I'm pretty sure I'm retiring from the league as soon as turn 40. That's when my grandpa started playing golf, so that's my current plan. |

I live in Silver Spring, a cozy suburb on the northern border of DC, right in the middle of the ice planet Hoth.
I've seen pictures of myself in more snow than this, but I was too young to remember them. Supposedly our dog walked over the fence when I lived in New York. So today was pretty fun, especially since I had no where to be and heat, electricity, internet were doing just fine.
Mary and I walked to the co-op / deli shopping center around the corner just to see if it was open. The greasy chinese food restaurant was, but everything else was closed. However, the bakery did manage to make their bagel delivery to the deli sometime this morning, and just left it in front! They were going to get soaked, so we decided it was more morally incorrect to let food go to waste.
So if you like everything bagels, speak up. I already had one. There are probably only 60 left.

Our new roomate Squirrel had her picture taken around the apartment. Still under no delusions about my ability to have a shedding pet permanently, but she's been great aside from the first 2 adjustment nights. I only wish it were colder so she could teach those mice from last year a lesson.

| 2 new things I like |
[Jul. 26th, 2009|11:29 pm] |
1. I got the green book in the background in a used bookstore in Portland. It's a checkers book with lots of puzzles and strategy. I confess I haven't had a lot of patience to read the strategy, but the end game puzzles are a lot of fun. The book kinda smells like death, so it limits the amount of time I'm willing to spend on it.
2. The camera used to take the picture. I ordered it Thursday morning; it arrived Friday w/ standard shipping. If this post had been titled 3 things I like, the next on the list would be newegg. I've been w/o camera for almost 2 years now, and I wanted to get a nice one before Jesse's wedding. I'm not sure if I'll continue on this flickr path or switch over to Picassa. For the 5 people still left reading live journal, stay tuned....
